Recruiting
- Oct – Jan prior to Year 1; Applicants have a 2 day visit
- Joint recruiting with the Department of Medicine Residency Director, Fellowship Director and the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS)
- The 2 day visit will be split proportionately between the Medicine Residency, Fellowship Program and the DGS
- During the Residency portion, the PSTP applicants will have a chance to visit with a member of the PSTP Steering Committee, who will provide an overview of research opportunities at the U
Internal Medicine (2 years)
PSTP Year 1: Start Internal Medicine Internship (July)
- Meet with PSTP program director, NIH Training Grant PI, Division Director, and DGS (PSTP Committee)
- Develop a career development plan outline
- Meet with Residency Director to discuss career development plan
PSTP Year 2: Internal Medicine Residency
Meet with PSTP Committee every 6 months
- Apply for graduate school program (for admission, fall of PSP year 3)
- Take GRE, if needed (many programs will accept the MCAT)
- Identify 3 labs to rotate in
Fellowship (4-5 years; 3 years research time)
For students enrolled in a PhD program, graduate training precedes clinical training
Top priority is to arrange REQUIRED CLINICAL TIME in summer - between the end of spring semester (mid May) and the start of fall semester (after Labor Day) to avoid conflict with required courses
PSTP Years 3 to 5: Research Years (1/2 day continuity clinic, 2 months clinical time (summer) for trainees needing more than 1 year of clinical training (e.g. CARDS, GI, PCC)
Year 3:
- Summer - rotate in 3 labs for 1 month each; choose lab
- Start in chosen lab at the start of month 4; Form thesis committee
- Fall - start coursework
- Spring - coursework
- End of spring semester, complete written preliminary exam
- Summer - Write NRSA grant for fall deadline
- Oral preliminary examination completed by end of summer
Year 4:
- Fall coursework
- Continue research
- Meet with thesis committee every 6 months
Year 5:
- Complete thesis research
PSTP Years 6 (& 7, if needed as required by ABIM) Clinical Years
Year 6:
- Clinical Training
- Write and defend PhD thesis by end of the year total PhD duration, 4 years
Year 7:
- Clinical Training
- Write NIH K Award
