Mission

To foster the growth and development of those residents wishing to pursue careers as practitioners, educators, researchers, and leaders in hospital medicine.

Vision

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota, utilizing the nationally renowned, 70 member HealthPartners Medical Group hospitalist faculty at Regions Hospital in partnership with Fairview/UMP Hospital Medicine Program at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, will lead the nation in the development of hospital medicine practitioners and leaders.

Overview

Hospital medicine physicians seek to teach all students and residents the fundamentals in the care of the hospitalized patient. Those residents interested in pursuing a career in hospital medicine may do so with the guidance of the Section of Hospital Medicine within the Department of Medicine. Our curriculum is geared to train young physicians to be practitioners, educators, researchers, and leaders in hospital medicine. This mission will be accomplished during the three years of Internal Medicine training.

The curriculum is built on the foundation of the world-renowned Internal Medicine residency training program at the University of Minnesota. It will be guided by the principles of the Hospital Medicine Core competencies adopted by the Society for Hospital Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Opportunities for research will enhance experience further and nurture those interested in developing clinical research skills. Senior residents may also be asked to participate in continuing medical education programs as faculty speakers. A poster presentation at either regional or national Society of Hospital Medicine meetings will be expected. This may be accomplished with a clinical vignette, program innovation, research or quality improvement project.
