Why did you decide to come to the U of M Residency Program? I decided to come to UofM because of the people. Everyone at my interview seemed extremely smart but they were also so laid back and really seemed like people I would want to spend time with. Why did you decide to come to the U of M Residency Program? I wasn't sure what I looking for going into the interview cycle and ended up applying broadly all over the country. I learned I preferred medium-larger sized, urban, academic programs with multiple training sites. My significant other works in pediatrics so we needed children's hospitals nearby. Ultimately, my interview day sold me on U of M and I couldn't be happier with my decision to come here. I love our 4+4 schedule, my co-residents are a blast to work with, and the faculty and program leadership are supportive. Wellness and quality of life are strongly emphasized here too. For me that means getting out of work at a reasonable hour and playing basketball at the U a few times per week.

What do you enjoy about the program? I love the food at the VA, the complexity of patients at the U, and the culture of efficiency at Regions. I've also had really great senior residents on each rotation so far and the chiefs at each site are immensely helpful.

It provides the opportunity for all interns to get together and learn and it is also a great opportunity to socialize with other interns.

Why did you decide to come to the U of M Residency Program? I chose to come here for residency because I had a great interview day and felt like it was a very supportive environment for residents. It was also clear that this program was equipped with all resources I would need to prepare me for any path I were to choose after residency (which was helpful because I'm not sure yet what I want that path to be!)

What do you enjoy about the program? Best part of this program are my co-residents! I also really appreciate that resident feedback is taken seriously and that changes are implemented based on the feedback that we give.

Medicine interests and plans after residency: I'm not sure yet! I am leaning towards becoming a hospitalist but I also have learned I have an interest in primary care so possibly a combination of the two. I'm also still pretty open to other possibilities!

Why did you decide to come to the U of M Residency Program? It was my last interview of the year. I didn’t really have any intention of coming to the U of M. But, I remember sitting at the interview dinner thinking “I just fit with these people.” This carried through into the interview day. Everyone I met was so welcoming. I felt like the program was just one big family. After the interview day, I remember hopping into the car my husband picked me up in and said, “I want to go to Minnesota.”

Did I mention my interview was during a blizzard? Not only is the program amazing, but the state of Minnesota is amazing! People are still out and about when it’s freezing cold outside! There is something for everyone in Minnesota whether it’s sunny, raining, or snowing.

What do you enjoy about the program? One of the things I appreciate most about the program is how much they focus on residents’ quality of life without distracting from academic rigor. They are also very open to change. For example, there have been a few rotations where residents consistently violate the 80-hour work week rule. The program recognized the problem, took resident feedback, and they made changes to address the problem. Another positive change has been the addition of IMED, which is an academic half day where all the residents or interns meet and learn about a topic. This has been great to not only take a break from clinical duties to focus on learning but also to socialize with your peers.

Medicine interests and plans after residency: I want to be a rural hospitalist

Favorite Minnesota activity worth trying: All the breweries- I think we’ve tried 35 so far! Also, going up to Duluth and the North Shore is a must-do day trip!

The variety gives great exposure to the breadth of internal medicine.

Why did you decide to come to the U of M Residency Program?

After getting to work with some of the residents and attendings while I went to medical school here, I was able to see that the culture and personality of the program would be a good fit for me. From my experience, I knew that the medical teams created great learning environments in which I felt comfortable to propose my own ideas and ask questions. Also, we always had fun at work. It felt easy to build connections and become friends with colleagues, which I knew would be important to my overall happiness during residency.

Having multiple sites was another draw for me. Rotating through 3 unique sites ensures plenty of variety. I wanted my training to be well rounded so I could be prepared for anything, as my specific career plans were still undefined while applying for residency. This program definitely keeps future career opportunities open- hospitalist, fellowship, research, primary care, global health, etc.

Additionally, the University of Minnesota has some significance in my family. One of my aunts received a transplant here, so it was special to me to continue my training with the program that had impacted my life and my family in such a meaningful way. Speaking of family, they all live here in Minnesota- to add another reason why I chose to stay. "

What do you enjoy about the program?

    1. Our schedules are reasonable.
    2. I enjoy the company of my co-residents.
    3. The attendings are enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring.
    4. The program is open to some customization- I feel like my interests are taken into account with scheduling, rotations, and extra activities.
    5. Our program has a growth mindset, always looking to improve. Administration typically follows through on feedback regarding what needs improvement.
    6. I enjoy the variety of the different sites- academic, private, VA
    7. Frequent program social events
    8. Location- Minneapolis is a very fun place to be a young professional. "

Medicine interests and plans after residency: I will most likely be a hospitalist- I like EVERYTHING too much to narrow my future plans any further, at this point.

Favorite Minnesota activity worth trying: The Minnesota State Fair! But throughout the rest of the year, there is still plenty to do! There are tons of great restaurants here. The lakes are beautiful and fun year-round (paddle boarding, kayaking, running, ice skating). The individual neighborhoods within Minneapolis and St. Paul are fun to explore- each with a unique culture and feel with shops, restaurants and breweries.

Coolest/geekiest/most random thing about you: I was in the top three in the Miss Minnesota competition- twice! Also, I am an enthusiastic advocate for fanny packs; I believe them to be both fashionable and functional.

What do you enjoy most about the program? Easy answer; the people. The chiefs, senior residents, co-interns, staff, and administration are all incredible. It truly is a community. After that, I would have to say the diversity of the three training sites.
