Biography Summary

Dr. Kunisaki grew up in Northern California, completed his undergraduate training at the University of California at Davis, and received his M.D. degree from The Ohio State University. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, followed by an Adult Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 2007, initially supported on an NIH K12 award, and he received his first NIH R01 award in 2009. Dr. Kunisaki's clinical research program includes a broad range of studies relating to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep-disordered breathing, and HIV-associated lung and sleep disorders. He is currently PI of an NIH-funded, 80-site, 20-country randomized clinical trial investigating HIV-associated lung disease and PI of an NIH-funded, UK-based study of sleep disorders in HIV-positive persons. Dr. Kunisaki's clinical activity includes electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy procedures. He is Medical Director of the COPD Case Management Program at the Minneapolis VA, and actively attends and teaches on both the Pulmonary Consult and Critical Care services at the Minneapolis VA. Outside of medicine, he is an avid mountain biker, and also enjoys snowboarding, live music, and keeping up with his two active sons.
