Hennepin County Medical Center

Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) is a 430 bed general hospital in downtown Minneapolis. The patient population is comprised of immigrants from a variety of Latin American, African, and Southeast Asian countries as well as other inner city residents. Infectious disease problems include those that are common in refugee/immigrant populations (e.g., extrapulmonary tuberculosis, neurocysticercosis, and malaria), injection drug users, (e.g., infective endocarditis) and the elderly. The HCMC HIV Clinic is the largest in the state of Minnesota (over 1,000 patients), and the HIV clinical research program is an area of special emphasis for the ID Division. There is also ongoing interest in musculoskeletal infections and in infections in patients in the Critical Care Unit. The regional Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic is located near HCMC and is directed by the Infectious Diseases Service. The clinical infectious diseases fellowship at HCMC will provide experience in all of these areas.
