Portrait of Natalie Akkerman Natalie Akkerman joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation in February 2013. She grew up in Lakeville, Minnesota. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She went on to complete her Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota.


Katrina Miller PA-C joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation in May 2018. She grew up in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. She received her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. She took a few years off to work in Neurology and then went on to receive her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.


Portrait of Karen Penningtion Karen Pennington joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplant in June 2009. She received her undergraduate degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. She completed her Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies at the Arizona School of Health Sciences. She is a native of Minnesota and has been caring for hematology and oncology patients since the completion of her master's program in 2000.


Portrait of Sarah Poveda Sarah Poveda joined the Division of Hematology, Oncologyand Transplantation in Juneof 2010. She grew up in Alexandria, Minnesota but has also spent time living in Nicaragua. She received her undergraduate degree in Biological Chemistry from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. She completed her Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota.


Portrait of Lucy Reinhardt Lucy Reinhardt joined the Division of Hematology, Oncologyand Transplantation in 2006. Lucy grew up in Rochester, Minnesota. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and later attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN where she received her Master's degree in Physician Assistant studies.

 


Portrait of Juliet Tatsumi Juliet Tatsumi is a certified Physician Assistant joining the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation in November 2017. She received her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies degree from DeSales University in 2012. Her prior experience includes Bone Marrow Transplant at the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Surgical oncology/General surgery and Trauma at Hennepin County Medical Center, and inpatient Adult Hematology/Oncology at the University of Minnesota. Having realized cancer care is her true passion, she has returned to the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation as part of the Masonic Cancer Clinic's outpatient team.


Portrait of Emma Turnquist Emma Turnquist joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation in March 2015. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology, Society, and the Environment at the University of Minnesota. Emma went on to complete her Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.


Portrait of Tanya Watson Tanya Watson is an adult certified nurse practitioner who has been working in oncology and hematology at the University of Minnesota since 2003. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from Calvin College, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She worked as a staff nurse in Indiana prior to moving to Minnesota. She worked as an inpatient oncology nurse in Minneapolis while obtaining a Master's of Art in Nursing at the College of St. Catherine. She completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2008. In addition to patient care responsibilities, Tanya manages the hematology/oncology Advanced Practice provider team.


Portrait of Alexis Wypyszynski Alexis Wypyszynski PA-C received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Minnesota in 2014. She then continued her education at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse-Mayo-Gundersen Physician Assistant program, graduating with her Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies in 2017. After developing a passion for cancer care at the Mayo Clinic, she returned to her alma mater, joining the University of Minnesota Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation in September 2017. Outside of clinic she enjoys spending time with her family, weekends up north at the cabin, and playing board games with her husband.

Portrait of Annie Barlow Annie Barlow is a Physician Assistant who joined the inpatient Hematology/Oncology team in October 2016. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Fitness from Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota and her Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Worcester, Massachusetts. Prior to coming to the University of Minnesota she worked in Family Practice in Pennsylvania and Minnesota and most recently in Hematology/Oncology at the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, North Dakota. She enjoys traveling, sports, cooking, and spending time with her husband and Golden Retrievers, Chara and Grace.


Portait of Suzanne Canney Nguyen Suzanne Canney Nguyen completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She attended PA school at A.T. Still University in Mesa, AZ. She completed her Master of Public Health in Environmental Health at the University of Minnesota. She has special interests in environmental epidemiology and maternal/child health. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, running and cooking with her husband.

She attended the University of Minnesota Duluth where she received a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology in 2013. She then went on to complete her Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Bethel University. She enjoys hiking, playing tennis, reading, and spending time with family and friends.


Portrait of Margaret Christner Margaret Christner joined the division of Hematology, Oncology, & Transplantation in October 2016. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Margaret went on to complete her Master of Medical Science through the Physician Assistant Program at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC.


Portrait of Yazmin Clark Yazmin Clark, DNP, APRN, CNP is a certified Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner who joined the HOT Unit in April 2017. Prior to joining the HOT Unit, she worked as an Oncology/Hematology care provider at Humphrey Cancer Center in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Yazmin received her Bachelor's degree in nursing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She later earned her advanced degree in nursing, with Adult/Geriatric focus, and her DNP from St. Catherine University. Prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, Yazmin worked as a Registered Nurse in emergency care at UMMC-Fairview. In addition, her desire to give back inspired her to volunteer on several medical missions to Honduras, South America. In her free time, she enjoys exercising, cooking healthy meals, and traveling to explore other cultures of the world. 


Portrait of Meghann Pierce Meghann Cody, DNP, APRN, CNP, is a certified Adult Nurse Practitioner who joined the HOT Division inpatient hematology/oncology team in April 2011. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Oregon Clark Honors College, where she worked for a year in the Institute of Neuroscience. She went on to receive both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing. Before becoming a Nurse Practitioner, Meghann worked as a Registered Nurse in hematology/oncology at VCU Medical Center. She relocated to the Twin Cities in January 2011. She completed the Doctor of Nursing Practice at St. Catherine University in December 2013. In addition to providing quality patient care, Meghann is the inpatient hematology/oncology advanced practice provider team lead. 


Portrait of Bethany Hanke Bethany Hanke is a Nurse Practitioner in the inpatient Hematology/Oncology department. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, she worked as a Registered Nurse in the inpatient setting for 5 years.

 


Portrait Liz Herrity Liz Herrity joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, Transplantation in July 2016. She received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from South Dakota State University in 2011, and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice with a specialty in Adult Gerontology Acute Care from Winona State University in 2016. Prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, she was a Registered Nurse on the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant floor at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and in the Intensive Care Units at North Memorial Hospital. She enjoys running, playing soccer, and spending time with her wheaten terrier, Opal.


Portrait of Lindsay Johnson Lindsay Johnson is a Nurse Practitioner who started at the University of Minnesota in April of 2018. Prior to coming to the University of Minnesota, Lindsay worked for Hematology inpatient for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. During her time at Mayo Clinic She served as the Lead Social chair for the division, as well as developed a Patient-centered Recreational program for cancer patients. She Recently relocated to Minneapolis, but is a Florida native. She loves to travel and spend time with family.


Portrait of Karli McGill Karli McGill, FNP-BC, MSN, MN joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, Transplantation in June 2017. She majored in Biology and minored in Creative Writing at Colby College in Maine. She attended the University of Minnesota for her Masters' of Nursing degree, and The George Washington University for her Family Nurse Practitioner degree. She most recently lived in Portland, Maine for four years, working at New England Cancer Specialists. She enjoys taking her golden retriever, Tangawizi ("ginger" in Swahili), for long walks along the lakes with her family. Karli enjoys playing soccer and skiing out West. When she isn't enjoying the Minnesota outdoors, she enjoys traveling, crafting, and settling the island of Catan.


Portrait of Krista Nuessle Krista Nuessle is a Physician Assistant who joined the HOT Division inpatient hematology/oncology team in July 2015. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Bethel University. She completed her Master's degree in Physician Assistant Practice from Rosalind Franklin University of Medical Sciences in Chicago. Prior to coming to the University of MN she worked in Family Practice with Westside Community Health Services in St Paul and for MN Oncology in Coon Rapids.


Portrait of Laura Pillsbury Laura Pillsbury, PA is a Physician Assistant who joined the Inpatient Hematology/Oncology team at the University of Minnesota in November 2011. She is originally from Arlington, Virginia. Laura received her Masters of Science in Health Science/Physician Assistant Degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. Prior to becoming a Physician Assistant, she worked as Clinical Research Coordinator, specializing in Multiple Myeloma, at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts.


Portrait of Brenna Hawkins Brenna Radermacher, DNP, APRN, NP- C joined the inpatient Hematology/Oncology team in July 2017. Brenna completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2012. Brenna worked as a registered nurse for five years on the inpatient hematology/oncology unit at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. She advanced her education at the University of Minnesota, where she obtained her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree. In her free time, Brenna enjoys spending time with family and friends, spending time outdoors, traveling, and cooking.


Portrait of Cassandra Reed Cassandra Reed is a Physician Assistant who joined the inpatient Hematology/Oncology team in January 2017. She is originally from Clear Lake, Wisconsin. Her undergraduate schooling was completed at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She proceeded to attend Mayo School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minnesota and received her certification in Medical Laboratory Science. Cassandra went on to complete her Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing sports, quilting, and traveling.


Portrait of Tara Rick Tara Rick is a Physician Assistant in the Hematology/Oncology department. She received her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science from Saint Cloud State University. Tara graduated magna cum laude from the honor's program. She completed her master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Augsburg College. Tara is a native of Minnesota but has spent time living in Northern England and Southern California.


Portrait of Abbie Wren Abbie Wren graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2006 with a Bachelor's of Nursing degree. She worked for 5 years as a Registered Nurse in Hematology and Oncology, experiencing both inpatient medical/surgical care, as well as outpatient chemotherapy administration. She completed her Master's of Science degree in 2011 from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and went on to be certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner through the ANCC. Abbie and her husband relocated to Minneapolis in the summer of 2011, and Abbie subsequently joined the new Hematology/Oncology/Transplant inpatient Advanced Practice Provider team. Abbie has a strong passion for Hematology/Oncology, Surgery, and health and fitness. She is enjoying the Twin Cities; loves to run, cross country ski, read, and cook!

Portrait of Brenna Hawkins Noel Amborn, PA-C joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation in August 2017. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, MN. She then went on to receive her Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse-Mayo-Gundersen program in 2017. She was first introduced to blood and marrow transplant while completing clinical rotations at the Mayo Clinic and following graduation relocated to her home of Minneapolis to start her career in BMT at the University of Minnesota. In her free time she enjoys hiking, kayaking, camping, downhill skiing, photography, and baking sweets.


Portrait of Claire Carrier Claire Carrier received her undergraduate degree (B.A. in Linguistics and German Literature) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and subsequently graduated with honors from the Boulder College of Massage Therapy. Prior to attending PA school at the University of Iowa, Claire worked as an EMT, taught/supervised massage therapy, and practiced as a private massage therapy practitioner for several years. Claire speaks German and Italian, having spent a year studying in each country. Travel has been an important influence in her life; she has lived in Europe and Antarctica and has had the good fortune of traveling to five of the seven continents. Claire joined our Adult BMT team in July 2007.


Portrait of Natalie Dieterle Natalie Dieterle joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation in November 2011. She fell in love with the field of blood and marrow transplant while in graduate school in Chicago, IL. She became a PA through Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL in 2001. She went on to start her career in bone marrow transplant, first at the University of Chicago, followed by the University of Michigan and Karmanos Cancer Center. She and her husband relocated to Minnesota, and after spending some time at home with her three children, she returned to work in bone marrow transplant here at the University of Minnesota.


Portrait of Annette Friedheim Annette Friedheim is a certified nurse practitioner and has been working in advanced practice with the Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at the University of Minnesota since 1996. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Speech Pathology from Northern Arizona University and her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from Baylor University in Dallas, Texas. Annette worked as a bone marrow transplant coordinator and nurse clinician before receiving her Master's of Science at the University of Texas in Houston.


Portrait of Kristen Jimenez Kristen Jimenez received her Bachelor of Arts degree (Human and Health Services Emphasis) from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. She received her Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant from Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI). She was a PA in Adult Bone Marrow Transplant for two years at The Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee, WI). Kristen joined the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the University of Minnesota in 2009.


Portrait of Tasha Kell Tasha Kell, NP graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire with a degree in Health Care Administration and a minor in Spanish Studies. She went on to complete the Physician Assistant graduate program through Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Her professional background includes public health, women's health and in the emergency department as a scribe. Her favorite pastimes include hiking the 14ers of Colorado with her husband and playing with her two children. She is thankful for the opportunity to work with families and individuals undergoing bone marrow transplant.


Portrait of Angela Kramer Angela Kramer attended the College of St. Catherine where she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1998. She subsequently received her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Augsburg College in 2005. Prior to attending PA school, she worked in dialysis, women's health, as an EMT, and also gained personal experience with bone marrow transplant. Angela joined the University of Minnesota Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant Team in July 2006.


Portrait of Mary Nick Mary Nick, MPAS, PA-C, MT(ASCP) received her undergraduate degree in Bacteriology and Public Health from Washington State University. Following an additional year of focused study in Medical Technology, she was certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. During her 16 years as a MT she was employed in several roles including STAT Laboratory Supervisor, and Hematology specialist, at a Seattle lab working for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. She was also a Medical Technology Student Educator for Swedish Hospital in Seattle and a Progenitor Cell Laboratory Technologist at the BMT program at the University of Nebraska. Mary graduated with distinction from the University of Nebraska Medical Center with a Masters Degree in Physician Assistant Studies and joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation in October 2004.


Portrait of Libby Schafer Libby Schafer joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation initially in March 2013. Libby received her undergraduate degree in International Relations from Drake University in 2009, went on to complete Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE in 2012. Libby briefly returned to Omaha in 2015, working in Oncology Infectious Disease there and subsequently returned to the division in 2016. 


Sasha Skendzel Sasha Skendzel, MSN, RN, ACNP-BC worked as a nationally certified medical assistant while enrolled in the nursing program at Eastern Michigan University. In 2009, Sasha graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and was inducted into the honors society Sigma Theta Tau. After graduation, she worked as a staff and charge nurse on the medical/surgical trauma unit at the University of Michigan while attending graduate school. In 2012, she graduated at the top of her class from the University of Michigan with a Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) and was inducted into the honors society Phi Kappa Phi. Sasha was always drawn to the field of oncology and has found providing care for cancer patients very rewarding. She plans on completing a doctorate in nursing before 2016. Sasha joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation in October of 2013. In her spare time, she loves to hike, fly fish, downhill ski, camp, snowshoe, and spend time with her husband and furry four-legged family members.


Portrait of Betsy Tello Betsy Tello graduated from Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI with a BS in Nursing. She attended the University of Minnesota and received her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. Betsy was a Registered Nurse at the University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview in the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Unit for five years prior to joining the adult BMT program as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in 2007.


Portrait of Sarah Witt Sarah Witt joined the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation in March 2014. She grew up in Omaha, NE. Sarah received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She went on to complete her Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.
