Interventional Cardiology Faculty

  • Stephen Battista, MDI think all patients are unique and need to be evaluated and tested in a sensitive and caring manner. The best care results from the appropriate blend of science and compassion.

  • Alan Berger, MD, MPH: Merging knowledge and experience in cardiology and epidemiology, Dr. Berger cares for individual patients, and for the heart health of the general public as well. In March 2010, he became the quality and outcomes director for interventional cardiology.

  • Stefan Bertog, MD: Dr. Stefan Bertog is the co-director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and a staff cardiologist at the CardioVascular Center in Frankfurt, Germany. He is board certified in Cardiology in the US and Germany and in interventional cardiology, vascular medicine, endovascular therapy, echocardiography and hypertension in the US.

  • Timinder Biring, MD

  • Gladwin Das, MD: Dr. Das completed his general- and interventional-cardiology fellowships at the University of Minnesota, joined the faculty in 1994, and served as the medical director of interventional cardiology and cardiac catheterization from 2005-February 2010. As director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory, Dr. Das established a Level I STEMI program and initiated process improvements resulting in median door-to-balloon times of less than 60 minutes. In partnership with Dr. Ken Liao of the division of cardiothoracic surgery, he has pioneered a growing hybrid percutaneous coronary intervention/robotic-assisted coronary-artery bypass grafting program, which he now directs.

  • Santiago Garcia, MD: Dr. Santiago Garcia completed medical school at the University of Buenos Aires and his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Miami in Florida. After that, he completed a Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship and an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

  • Steven Heifetz, MDI trained at UCLA, the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota and am a recognized expert in echocardiography, stress echo and transesophageal echocardiography.

  • Greg Helmer, MD: Active in research, Dr. Helmer's special interests include interventional cardiology, as well as angiogenesis for collateral blood vessel growth.

  • Abdi Jama, MD, FACC: Cardiologist, Vascular Medicine Specialistl. 

  • David Laxson, MD: Board Certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Interventional Cardiology.

  • S. Kimara March, MD, MS: Board Certifications in Adult Congenital Heart Disease from the American Board of Internal Medicine. American Board of Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. 

  • Ganesh Raveendran, MD, MS: A graduate of the University of Minnesota’s general- and interventional-cardiology fellowship programs, Dr. Ganesh Raveendran joined the faculty in 2005 after practicing at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In addition to interventional cardiology, Dr. Raveendran is board-certified in critical-care medicine. In March 2010, he became the medical director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory and the administrative director for interventional cardiology. In 2007, Dr. Raveendran earned a master’s degree in clinical research design and statistical analysis. His current research interests include autologous stem-cell therapy for cardiac repair. 

  • Rizwan Siddiqui, MD

  • Robert Wilson, MD: Dr. Wilson has dedicated his professional life to developing new methods for diagnosing and treating heart disease, and to training new physicians. He presently directs the University of Minnesota interventional cardiology fellowship program and University of Minnesota Physicians clinical cardiovascular services.

  • Demetris Yannopoulos MD: Born in London, UK, Dr. Yannopoulos received his M.D. from the University of Athens in Greece. He completed his medicine residency and general-cardiology fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Following an interventional cardiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Yannopoulos joined the University of Minnesota faculty in 2008. In March 2010, he became the research director for interventional cardiology.
