PEER EVALUATION PROGRAM
GENERAL MEDICINE INPATIENT TEACHING SERVICE

Revised - March 20, 2008

GOALS:

  • To provide an opportunity for constructive feedback on teaching skills for all faculty who attend on the general medicine inpatient teaching service
  • To offer faculty an opportunity to demonstrate competency in teaching skills
  • To serve as evidence of peer feedback/professionalism to the undergraduate and graduate learners in the general medicine inpatient teaching service

 METHODS:

  • Evaluative tool will be both reviewed and vetted with faculty
  • Faculty will be invited to serve as peer evaluators at the beginning of each academic year.
  • Only faculty who indicate willingness to serve as peer evaluators will be invited to participate in this program.
  • On a quarterly basis, faculty who will be attending on the Firms over the upcoming 3 months will receive an email from the General Medicine Division to determine if they desire a peer evaluation.
  • This email will include a list of the faculty members who have agreed to serve as evaluators.
  • If a faculty member desires an evaluation, he or she will be asked to identify which of the faculty who have agreed to serve as evaluators they would like us to invite to conduct their observation.
  • The Division will then send an invitation to that faculty member that includes the observee’s assigned dates of service.
  • Once a date is set, the Division will send both faculty members a confirmation email that includes a copy of the peer evaluation form.
  • One week prior to the observee’s two-week block of service during which the peer evaluation is scheduled, a reminder email will be sent to both the observer and observee reminding them to:
    • Schedule a meeting to establish ground rules (30 minutes)
    • Confirm the actual observation (no greater than one-hour)
    • Schedule a follow-up meeting to debrief/provide feedback on the evaluation (30-60 minutes).
