Medicine Firm Overflow Policy

MEDICINE FIRMS OVERFLOW

Medicine Firm Staff on long call will contact you and the Patient Placement Managers on weekdays whenever they require your assistance with admissions.  Teaching Firms (A-D) may request your help:

  • When the resident team has capped.
  • When the team is overwhelmed with boluses of admissions that will likely result in keeping the residents in the hospital past 11pm and/or capping the nightfloat resident early.  (These are unacceptable outcomes!)

PATIENT CENSUS CAP

The General Medicine Consult Service has a census cap of 16 patients.  If you are concerned that the service is too near capping at the end of your shift, please consider transferring one or more patients to a teaching firm the following morning or signing off on patients who may no longer require the daily assistance of a medicine consultant.  Please finalize an interim or discharge summary on patients you may consider transferring to a teaching firm.

 RIVERSIDE TRANSFER POLICY

If the service is nearing the patient census cap and you need to initiate the Riverside “pop-off”, please click on the following link for details: http://www.dom.umn.edu/dom/firms/issue1/transferpolicy.html
