HOSPITALIST MEDICINE CONSULTATION SERVICE
UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
- Staffed by Faculty (only) from 7 AM - 6 PM, M-F and 7 AM – 3 PM on weekends.
- Coverage provides urgent assistance and cross-cover on established and new consultations from 6 PM – 7 AM by UMMC Moonlighter (job code 6633), M-F and on weekends after 3 PM

- Request a Medicine Consult in FCIS.
SERVICES
- Traditional consultations - We are happy to assist in the care of any hospitalized patient, especially those having multiple or complex medical diagnoses. Studies have demonstrate improved quality of patient care in a hospitalized setting using the assistance of an Internist particularly for patients with any of the following:
- Diabetes – types I or II.
- Congestive Heart Failure.
- History of Myocardial Infarction or Stroke.
- Moderate to severe COPD.
- Chronic Kidney Disease (Cr 2.0 or greater).
- Hypertension.
- History of venous thromboembolic disease.
- Preoperative risk assessment and recommendations for risk reduction.
Specifically requesting “Medicine Consult with orders and ongoing management of XXX diagnoses will allow our Internists to:
- Write orders.
- Assist with discharge care coordination.
- Contact the patient’s primary physician regarding the details
of hospitalization.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES
- Admit patients when Gen Med firms are unable and for observation after IR and GI procedures.
- Provide education to subspecialty and surgery housestaff regarding medical management of subspecialty patients.
